When Can I Wear Linen?

When Can I Wear Linen?

Linen has become an integral part of most of our wardrobes now, carried in on the wave of more relaxed dressing, the most planet-friendly of all fabrics and our hotter and hotter weather. It is, of course, the first cloth that we wove and wore too, with evidence of twisted and dyed flax fibres found around 36,000 years ago! By 3,000 BC the Egyptians were weaving such fine linen it was almost transparent, and this great tradition of weaving flax into the most luxurious of cloths happily continues.

The Emma Willis linen shirt is designed to be worn formally or casually, all style details and linings considered.

The Collar The most important and visible part of a shirt, we use a slightly softer lining than for our cotton shirts, but firm enough to keep a flattering structure when worn open, framing the face, or when buttoned to sit well with a linen tie. This is not a floppy beach look linen, although our linen shirts have definitely had quite a lot of beach life too.

The Front The fronts on our linen shirts are not raised into the folded placket, but flat to give a more casual look of simplicity. The flat front also works untucked and it is good to have this flexibility with linen. Again the fronts still have a soft lining so they lie smoothly, but drape easily.

The Cuffs We like a one button rounded cuff for linen unless you are dressing for a formal but high Summer wedding and wearing a linen suit and tie, when a double cuff can be very elegant. A two button squared cuff is a little more formal than our first choice and a good way to slightly formalise a linen shirt.

The Hem The tail shape on our linen shirts is known as a speed hem, with no gusset at the side seam, just a gentle curve and our tiny seams and stitching which you can most definitely wear out as Emett is here, and show off even more of the world’s finest seamstresses' work!

Our ready-to-wear Slim Fit linen shirts have our EW cutaway collar, which works well both open and closed, a flat front, speed hem, one-button rounded cuff, and a classic collar on the fuller classic fit body.

If you would like more choice, our online made-to-measure or repeat bespoke service is ideal, or, of course, all options are available in our Jermyn Street shop.

From us all at Emma Willis, we thank you for your support and wish you a wonderful weekend.

Best wishes,
